Highway construction zones in India have invariably been high-risk areas, where trucks and busy work sites collide in a manner that can be deadly. Now, a new piece of technology promises to change all that. Vertis Infrastructure has introduced the country’s first Truck Mounted Attenuator or TMA at Pune’s Ador Campus, a system designed to absorb crashes and protect workers in live traffic conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike traditional safety measures, the TMA serves as a mobile bumper that absorbs the impact of any rear-end collision by slowing down striking vehicles in a controlled sequence. Consequently, the possibility of injury or fatality for workers and motorists alike will be reduced greatly. This technology is largely used in the United States and Europe but has been in operation since 2021 in India, credited to have averted over 100 odd fatalities so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While launching the campaign, officials from NHAI spoke of the need for zero-fatality corridors on national highways. According to Ankit Yadav, systems like TMAs are key to bringing safety parameters in high-risk areas of construction to a higher level. Zafar, Joint CEO of Vertis Infrastructure, explained that the project had but one objective: protecting personnel under difficult highway conditions while ensuring the continuity of smooth traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current rollout plan has twenty TMA units. Inauguration at the launch event was for eight units, and the rest are expected within ten days. The live operational demonstration, technical briefings, and discussions for the expansion of TMA deployment across other national highway projects also formed part of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to experts, this adoption of crash-absorption technology is a turning point for work-zone safety in India. Solutions tried and proven internationally are being combined in an effort to investigate rising accident rates without adversely affecting the steady flow of traffic. This initiative is part of a greater focus on modernizing national highways with advanced safety equipment and taking practical, preventive measures to reduce truck mishaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With India’s road network still expanding, technology such as TMAs may become part and parcel of highway construction zones. Officials and industry representatives look at it as more than just equipment but in the direction of creating safer roads, preventing avoidable accidents, and setting a benchmark for future highway safety initiatives across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
