ElectriGo, which operates as an electric bus leasing service, has announced the commencement of its operations in the Indian electric bus industry with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreement with Green Energy Mobility Solutions Ltd (GEMS) aimed at the deployment of a total of 50 electric buses. The agreement was signed earlier in the year.

As agreed in the MoU, ElectriGo will offer a complete solution related to the leasing of electric buses, and this will include providing buses to transporters, in addition to managing their maintenance and operation. The first set of 10 vehicles of this new platform was delivered in Hyderabad in mid-December to start operating in a scheduled manner, targeting both private and contract transporters.

ElectriGo forays into the electric bus market at a moment in time when the Indian government is encouraging the adoption of electric mobility solutions, specifically within the public and commercial transportation of passengers. The initiatives undertaken by the Indian government in the form of national tender notices for the procurement of thousands of e-buses in the country, under the PM e-Drive scheme, has also emphasized the need to focus on the electricification of the public transport of passengers in buses.

The structure of the GEMS partnership is such that it enables the rapid growth of the fleet, while having compatibility with current and upcoming transport offerings. GEMS, which manages electric vehicles under its mobility offerings, will employ the buses procured through the partnership on its networks, among other logistics efforts. Its model enables field service for monitoring, reliability, and understanding regulatory aspects for the users.

This is more than just expanding the fleet. It symbolizes the transition towards feasible electric transport solutions that can be used by private players without bearing the cost of procurement. Leasing electric buses along with support services may help reduce barriers and make cost efficiency better for the operators interested in shifting from diesel buses.

Both firms have said they intended for their collaboration to be an enabling factor for their larger clean mobility objectives in India, such as lower emissions and enhanced quality for urban transport systems. ElectriGo’s strengths in enabling integrated charging solutions, active maintenance solutions, and real-time monitoring for their fleets would help not only with their first foray into electric buses, but also with sustainable, long-term operations on more challenging routes.

As this partnership unfolds, industry watchers will wait to see the impact this leasing model has on the incorporation of electric buses in the market, amongst other commercial models that would help in speeding up the transition to green transportation in India.
