VinFast is planning on starting to produce electric buses in India, targeting a 2026 commercial launch. The company will expand its existing plant in Tamil Nadu to accommodate the production of the buses and e‑scooters alongside its ongoing operations on electric vehicles.

The present facility is spread over approximately 400 acres with a production capacity of 50,000 electric vehicles annually. The expansion will involve the addition of approximately 500 more acres in the region’s industrial park. That space will house dedicated workshops, assembly lines, and infrastructure for electric buses, two‑wheelers, and related components.

VinFast has invested about US$500 million in this second phase of development. With the expansion, it will have a production capacity of 150,000 units annually for cars, buses, and e‑scooters. The company seeks to address both individual mobility and public transportation with this move.

Leadership emphasizes the strategic importance of this expansion. By accessing bus and two‑wheeler segments, VinFast can reach a broader spectrum of the market in India. This initiative will target private consumers, shared mobility operators, and also public transport providers.

Local benefits are expected to be significant. The production lines will spur supply‑chain localization, job creation, and improvement in the work force’s technical skills. Support from the state government through infrastructure, permits, and incentives under policy has also been promised and helps the company scale up operations more smoothly.

The expansion is part of the broader vision of VinFast to establish a comprehensive electric vehicle ecosystem in India. In addition, its manufacturing strategy comprises distribution networks, charging infrastructure, after‑sales service, and technical support. The facility at Tamil Nadu would be the hub for these activities and consolidate the position of VinFast in India while contributing toward sustainable transport solutions for the country.

So, if all goes according to plan, 2026 could prove to be the year when locally produced VinFast electric buses hit Indian roads. The launch is set to meet the increasing demand for green mobility across India by offering environmentally friendly mass-transport alternatives. This move heralds a major step in VinFast’s efforts to integrate electric buses, scooters, and cars into a cohesive, sustainable mobility framework.
