India is known for its multicultural cuisine. We all use pulse in our daily meals, pulse is an essential part of food item. As we know pulses are incredibly rich in nutrition including protein, fibers, carbohydrates, and Minerals such as calcium, zinc, magnesium, potassium etc. According to Indian food culture, our meal cannot be complete without pulse. Pulses are a constant ingredient with other spices. We can make other varieties of dishes with different pulses like lentils, chickpeas, pigeon pea, and peas. But we don’t know from where these pulses come. Let’s embark a journey to know about the top ten pulse producing state in India. List of Top pulses producing states FY 2023-24:

  1. Rajasthan: Rajasthan holds first position in maximum pulse producing. According to National Horticulture Board (NHB) the state produced 4821.84 tons of pulse. The state is producing numerous types of pulse such as lentils (Masoor), pigeon peas (Arhar or Toor), chick peas (Chana dal), Kidney Beans (Rajma).
  2. Madhya Pradesh: Madhya Pradesh is the second largest state in producing pulse with 4364.74 tonnes in a year. Madhya is famous for higher production of Urad, Chana and Arhar. State government also provide subsidy for the higher cultivation of pulse.
  3. Maharashtra: Maharashtra holds third position in producing pulse with the large amount of 4,224.84 tons. Over 20 lakh hectares of land are used for the cultivation of potatoes and also to increase the revenue from pulse state government are providing schemes under Mahatma Phule Krishi Sanjivani Yojana.
  4. Uttar Pradesh: Uttar Pradesh is the fourth largest state of the cultivation for pulse with the amount of 2621.15 tons. The state is well known for its gram cultivation which covers highest area although Moong, Arhar and Urad are the most important crop. Programs like Pradhan Mantri Krishi yojana encourages the farmers for the cultivation and support financially.
  5. Karnataka: Karnataka is the fifth largest state which produce 2170.89 tons of pulse in a year. Different types of pulses including chickpea, pigeon pea, horse gram, black gram, and green gram are grown in the state. According to the soil and climate condition, long and short duration crops are grown in the state. Programs like drip irrigation plan, distribution of high-yielding hybrid seeds, the state government supports the farmers.
  6. Andhra Pradesh: Andhra Pradesh produced about 1759.93 tons of pulse within a year, making sixth largest state in the cultivator of pulse. The main pulses that are produced are horse, red, green, black, and Bengal grams. To enhance the market of pulse, state government provides schemes like Rythu Bharosa, which provides financial aid and subsidies for the farmers.
  7. Gujarat: Gujrat occupies seventh position in the field of cultivation of pulse with the highest volume of 1185.43. The main producing pulse are Toor, Moong, Urad and Gram. The state government implementing cutting-edge agrotechnology to enhance the productivity and farmers are also awarded with Ratan Lal Ninama Award for highest crop production.
  8. Jharkhand: Jharkhand is ragging on eighth position with 908.93 tons of pulse production. The main grown pulse is Arhar, Urad, Moong, and different types of grams. The state government continuous trying to enhance the productivity of pulse with the support program like crop insurance programs, irrigation facilities, and institutional credit lines. Jharkhand is capable to increase the highest yield of pulse.
  9. Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu produced 664.14 tons of pulse which makes the state ninth largest producing state. Green gram and black horse are the two main pulse that are grown in the state. The state government has expanded 3.97 to 7.85 lakh hectares of land for the cultivation of pulse. The government of Tamil Nadu promoting irrigation infrastructure, agriculture mechanization and seed Villages for more yield.
  10. Telangana: Telangana holds tenths position in the cultivation of pulses with 549.02 of higher volume. The state is known to produce pulse like red, black and green grams. The Telangana government provides subsidies for cropping pulses with other horticulture crops based on productivity. As well as to help the farmers the state government also supplies seeds, fertilizers, and micro-irrigation equipment.

Rajasthan is the country’s top producer of pulses, with Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra coming in second and third, respectively, demonstrating the wide range of farming methods used throughout the country. States like Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, each of which makes use of certain soil types, climatic circumstances, and state-sponsored agricultural initiatives to increase production, are also significant contributors to India’s output of pulses. The government is committed to assisting farmers and increasing pulse production, as seen by programs like financial aid, subsidies, and high-yield seed distribution.
